Stairlift Battery Replacement: What part of the stairlift is run by the battery?
The power source for a straight or curved stairlift is a battery that is continuously charged by a nearby outlet at the top or bottom of the stairway. The power supply keeps the batteries charged and ready, even during power outages. Fully charged batteries will continue to run up to 20 rides during an outage!
Stairlift batteries consist of two rechargeable 12v 7.4 ah batteries wired in series to run a 24-volt dc power motor. The batteries are VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid), designed to keep the electrolyte captive. This means that it’s protected from spinning, even if the battery is punctured. This type of security system makes Valve Regulated Lead Acid batteries the most popular reserve power design!
What is the typical longevity of a battery? How can it be maintained?
Depending on the usage, stairlift batteries last between 3 to 5 years. It is advised that the lift should be left to rest (and recharge) at its charge point when not in use. During a power outage, the battery should be saved by turning off the isolator switch when not in use. Otherwise, the lift should be left in the “On” position at all times.
The stairlift batteries don’t require maintenance. The only way to increase longevity is to properly park the chair at the charging point. A stairlift technician will check the battery during a maintenance visit to ensure the batteries are still charging properly. The technician will remove some parts of the carriage, extract the old battery and install the new battery to ensure continue safe usage.
When should a battery be replaced?
If the batteries are starting to fail, the stairlift will go slower than usual. It may also stop after a short distance and then continue, and may not recharge as it should. These are all indications that the batteries should be replaced. The batteries are charged every time it’s used and parked to ensure they are always fully charged. If the lift is not used for a while (ie away on vacation), ask a neighbour to ride the lift up and down the stairway to keep the juices flowing!
